Split Flip and Split Lutz (Kori Ade)

World and Olympic coach Kori Ade uses the split jump as a teaching tool for developing flow and rotation and proper jump/pick timing on flip and lutz jumps. She uses the split flip and split lutz all the time with her skaters. She explains that pick jumps need to pick on the way up and the split jump helps skaters develop that feeling (if they do the split jump correctly). She says, “We actually don’t talk about picking, staying down, and drawing [the feet together] because we feel that promotes picking on the way down. So there are a lot of exercises where we’re teaching the skater to rise as they tap.”

Kori likes the split flip and split lutz as drills “because it really teaches that their skating foot continues to move. That it doesn’t stop at the tap.” She notes that a skater needs to turn forward during the take-off movement and she references her earlier discussion of the first up and second up (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4). The video has some truly spectacular demonstrations by Jordan Moeller.
