Tips for Co-Centering a Change Foot Spin (Kim Ryan)

Spin specialist Kim Ryan shares important tips for skaters who are working on change foot spins but have problems maintaining the same center for both spins. It is ideal to push into the second spin and spin in the same spot as the first spin.

Kim begins by explaining the most common problems, such as pulling the new axis foot too far back before stepping. To address this on a sit-change-sit (forward sit into back sit spin), Kim has the skater think about stepping in front of the skating foot with the toe turned inwards (pigeon toed).  She says, “The whole point of this is to step ahead of yourself and pivot back to the center.” To get the pigeon toe to happen, she has the skater think “knee to knee.”

This is a slightly different way to approach this than that of other spin specialists such as Bobbe Shire or Charyl Brusch. Try these methods and see what works best for you or your skaters. Also see these videos:
