Remote Off-Ice Video Jump Lesson – Part 9 (Nick Perna)

International coach and jump specialist Nick Perna walks us through a remote off-ice video jump lesson. We can’t hear what Nick is saying to his skater, but he talks over the entire lesson with detailed information about what is going on. In Part 1, Nick had the skater warming up with a jump rope. In Part 2, he did some “special” walking warm up exercises. In Part 3, he explained the sprung-floor jumping platform his skater was using and began half turns. In Part 4 he did full turns and one foot landings, and in Part 5 he focused on axis with some turning hops in d-position. In Part 6 he shared a general jump walk-through as well as air position insights, and in Part 7 he worked on waltz-jump and axel take-off details. Part 8 was devoted to off-ice loop and waltz-loop combination.

In this short video, Nick shows the progression from waltz jump to “bell jump” or “once around” or “half axel.” He goes back to repeated half rotations off two feet to rehearse alignment and landing as discussed in Part 3. He then combines a waltz jump to two foot landing, followed by a 2-foot half turn. The next progression in the series is the waltz jump take-off, landing forward on two feet. Next up… the off-ice axel.
