Introducing Back Sit and Back Camel (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues a spin lesson (see Part 1 here and Part 2 here) and Part 3 here) by introducing a back camel and back sit spin. In the previous parts of the lesson, this skater worked on the basic sit spin, mushroom and camel positions, and upright attitude and hair cutter positions.

Charyl begins by introducing the back camel spin from a back pivot. The skater quickly gets the concept, but is unable to spin in the back camel for any length of time. Tips include remembering to keep the pivot foot stationary, and lifting the axis side arm during the pivot and stretch up into the spin.

It is clear this skater is unwilling to balance properly over the pivot foot for the back camel, so Charyl switches to working on the back sit spin. Common back sit errors are not leaning forward enough with the upper body to keep forward pressure on the blade, and not balancing or aligning over the axis side. Charyl focuses on these errors and wants the skater to “bend from the ankle a little bit more” and “arch the back” without sitting back too far. The hands-on teaching of the position and balance shows Charyl this skater lacks strength in the axis leg, so she has the skater do a backward gliding sit position on two feet while “dragging the toes” to build the necessary strength.
