In this short video, figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues a spin lesson (see earlier part of lesson here) by improving a combination spin which includes an upright forward variation (which Charyl calls a “shotgun” position). After one attempt at the full combination, Charyl works with the skater at the wall on the position of the upright portion of the spin. She offers quite a few tips in a short time, including: keep the skating foot square to the body, press on the forward part of the blade without looking at it, don’t lean back too far (which pulls weight off front of blade), don’t lean forward (“Once you lean forward, you’re in big trouble.”), straighten the skating leg, and keep the chin up and don’t let your head go forward.
During the catch foot portion of the camel in one of the next attempts, Charyl says, “Keep that grip in the ice.” This is good way for many skaters to feel a consistent balance position on the front of the blade while changing position. This is also an issue for this skater when in the upright position and Charyl says, “What happens when you go to your heel? You lose your balance? And it stops spinning? So I want you to really be aware of staying on the front of your blade more.”
