Off-Ice Choreography – Part 4 (Garrett Kling)

Choreographer Garrett Kling continues off-ice choreography with a higher level class for an on-ice group performance at a camp. The previous 3 videos of the series were the off-ice choreography for one of the lower level groups (see Part 1 and Part 2 and Part 3). In this video, Garrett is working with a higher level group that has different choreography. This video focuses on choreography where this group is providing background while the other groups are in the spotlight.

Notice the use of repeated movements, and slow or no skating. Also notice the level changes. The goal is to create movement without stealing the spotlight from the other groups. Also notice that Garrett repeatedly explains to these skaters that “it will make sense” which is quite different than the approach of teaching the younger/lower level class where it didn’t matter as much if they understood the big picture. Unlike the previous videos in this series, the value here isn’t so much in the movements themselves, but in seeing how Garrett handles a class of older and more advanced skaters and how he approaches their “filler” choreography.
