Improving a Combination Spin – Part 1 (Kim Ryan)

Spin specialist Kim Ryan begins a spin lesson with a skater working on improving a combination spin. We begin by watching the skater’s combination spin before any changes. Kim then focuses on just the lunge entry into the camel. To get the call for the lunge entry to camel, “You’ve got to get the lunge really low, and then you can’t pop up out of the lunge a little bit (like a little lilt) before you go into the camel. You have to stay down in that lunge as you draw that outside edge for the camel, and then rise for camel spin.”

Kim then focuses on this skater’s camel position. To work the position at the boards, Kim has her hold onto the front of the boards (rather than over the top to the back of the boards) with the hands “open” and the just the thumbs on top. She then works on the skater’s free leg turn out and extension. Kim has the skater flex (not point) and turn the free foot out (“blade parallel to the wall”) while standing at the wall, and then maintain that position as she raises the free leg behind her. This ensures the free leg remains locked and turned out, as a way to create the desired extension. Kim notes that some skaters like this one actually point the toe down when trying to point the toe, which is a big reason for flexing the free foot to keep the turnout. Kim then requests another camel with a lunge entry and improved position, shooting for 5 revolutions and she is impressed with the results (“Wow!”). She then has the skater do another to build consistency and it’s just as good.
