Important Spinning Advice (Bobbe Shire)

Figure skating spin specialist Bobbe Shire shares some thoughts about spin training. To start the video, she finishes up a discussion of the backspin layback she covered here. She suggests using a running 3-turn sequence to get into the spin. The free leg should be in the attitude position throughout the entry.

The real value in this video comes from the discussion regarding basic spins. As Bobbe notes, all skaters should have a level of mastery with all their basic spins before working on advanced spin positions. She tells a story of a rink she visited where skaters were attempting very difficult variations but most of the skaters couldn’t even do a basic sit-change-sit. Although there’s tremendous pressure to work more advanced skills, the mastery of the basics ensures the most rapid overall progression as a spinner and as a skater.
