Coach Kate Charbonneau continues a general lesson with a beginner level skater, using program elements as a roadmap for the lesson. Part 1 focused on footwork and spins, and Part 2 focused on some jumps. Part 3 focused on spin entries, back power three turns, and the flip jump and in this video the focus is on the lutz. This skater struggles with switching to the wrong edge and getting rotation.
Kate begins by putting the lutz attempt on one of the hockey circles and explaining the basic setup including arm and free leg positioning. She also encourage a push back just prior to the reach, and this push is done with an undercut using the axis skate. Kate says, “Let [the shoulders] start turning a little bit more when you go to put your toe in.” Using hands-on coaching, Kate helps the skater feel the proper alignment, the proper edge, and the timing needed for the push back and shoulder turn. This improves the jump considerably.
Next Kate demonstrates a larger pattern that has more of a straight line entrance (rather than staying on the hockey circle). On the “push back” she wants more knee bend to be able to “push and jump.” A major aspect of how Kate approaches this is focusing on “crossing and pressing and pushing back so you have a little bit more to jump from.”
