International coach and jump specialist Nick Perna walks us through a remote off-ice video jump lesson. We can’t hear what Nick is saying to his skater, but he talks over the entire lesson with detailed information about what is going on. In Part 1, Nick had the skater warming up with a jump rope. In Part 2, he did some “special” walking warm up exercises.
In this video, we start with a description of a homemade, do-it-yourself “sprung floor” or “off-ice jump platform.” The platform is easy to build, from commonly available materials, including an area rug, a piece of plywood, and some high density foam pads (attached with some tape). This creates a safe and forgiving jump surface that cushions impact from off-ice jumping.
Getting back to the off-ice jump lesson itself, Nick has the skater do half-turns, with the focus on anchoring the head. The goal is also to keep the legs straight, the back straight, and the spine flat.
