More Advanced Spins – Adding Difficulty (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues a lesson with an advanced spinner. In the previous part of this lesson, Charyl worked on this skater’s jump within a spin, going from a forward camel to a flying sit spin. That base is the foundation for the additional difficulty added in this part of the lesson. The full spin is a forward camel, flying sit “jump within a spin” transition to forward side sit spin followed by a change of foot to a backward non-basic or intermediate position (between sit and upright) with a core twist followed by a “shotgun” upright front backspin.

On the first attempt, Charyl notices a poor transition from the front sit to the back intermediate position where the skater loses speed, balance, and centering. This can be challenging with a core twist such as the one this skater is attempting, and Charyl recommends the skater pull the axis hip back to counteract the tendency for the free or non-axis hip to drift back and cause a loss of balance over the spin spot of the spinning skate. She also reminds the skater to “stay on the front of your blade” to help with this balance.

Charyl next asks the skater what she thinks about when doing a camel to a flying sit, especially in terms of jumping and tucking. The skater notes that she focuses on jumping and tucking at the same time (even though technically the jump happens first) as a way to ensure the tuck is quick enough. Charyl explains that to learn this skill, she has the skater do a camel spin and transition to an upright hop and just land in an upright. The simplification of initially neglecting both the tuck and the sit spin helps develop confidence and the correct fly, partly because this transition often feels like it’s going to tip over backwards to the skater. To learn the tuck, Charyl uses a one foot waltz jump with a tuck of the left leg since this is an easier concept for most skaters compared to the flying sit tuck. Charyl finishes by explaining the arm movements for the camel to flying sit.
