Coach and former French competitive skater Vincent Restencourt gives a small “group” lesson to two male skaters who are both working on triple axel. In some parts of the world, this kind of group lesson is very common, while in other parts of the world it is essentially unheard of, especially at this skating level. Both skaters start with other jumps, one with triple flip triple toe loop combination and the other with triple lutz. Vincent discusses timing and tempo a lot throughout this lesson, with both skaters and the various jumps attempted.
Some of the other technical details discussed include leading strongly into triple axel with the non-axis side/shoulder, committing to the jump, getting the knees tighter in the air, and stepping into triple axel with the hips underneath (rather than set back). Notice how Vincent limits the triple axel attempts for one of the skaters after noting the skater’s fatigue level. Vincent says, “You have to treat the triple axel as a diva, nice and gentle. Don’t ask questions… Just do it.” This is good advice for skaters who may overthink the jump or rush/overpower the jump by trying too hard.
