Coach Kate Charbonneau continues her lesson on spirals (see tips on basic spirals in Part 1 and Part 2). She begins this video by offering insights about a Biellmann spiral. For this spiral Kate recommends pulling up strongly with the upper body (middle and head) and letting the arms move independently. It’s helpful to get the free foot as high as possible with the first grab before grabbing with the second hand. Once both hands have grabbed successfully, Kate tells the skater to “feel like you’re going to straighten your foot and arms up to the ceiling.”
Next, Kate teaches this skater a one-arm grab spiral, where the skater grabs the free foot with the same side hand and stretches while lowering the upper body into a more traditional spiral position. This takes the free leg very high and allows the skater to use the non-grab arm for balance. To get the free leg higher, Kate says to let “your chest and your body dump out in front a little bit more.”
