Building Triple Salchow – Part 2 (Chris Conte)

International coach and jump specialist Chris Conte continues a group lesson for skaters working on triple salchow. In Part 1 he introduced some concepts and drills and in this video the skaters try some “more than doubles.” Chris tells the skaters, “Take your double, bump it up a little higher, try to close the rotation, and land in pirouette rotating.” The goal isn’t to fully rotate a triple, but to build jump height and rotation slowly and safely (good axis), and Chris describes this as simply trying to “over-rotate some doubles.”

He explains that he limits the amount of time (“about 5 minutes”) and repetitions for these over-rotated doubles. The first skater is short of rotation by roughly a half turn (from the quarter) but has good axis and a safe fall. The next skater lands barely beyond a double and the third skater does a double into pirouette. Because all of these skaters need more air time, Chris says, “Keep working the climb.”

On the pole with Chris helping, one of the skaters gets close to the quarter mark on a triple attempt, but is fairly lost in the air in terms of putting a landing on it. Chris acknowledges this by encouraging the skater not to “freak out on the back end.” He encourage a consistent tempo and uses the words “three, check, and release.” The skater opens a little early again on the next attempt and clearly lands short (nearly 90 degrees short this time).

Once skaters get more comfortable with the idea of over-rotating doubles, Chris says, “Then we just keep working the energy, the check, and the quickness of the through. Every day a little more, every day a little more.” Chris then explains he likes to teach in a class setting like this to make sure skaters understand the drills and concepts so that in private lessons he can focus more on pole harness work. He says, in class “I can present the material in group format and then in private lessons I don’t have to teach anything. It’s just correction and practice, practice, practice.”
