Coach Kate Charbonneau begins a series of videos explaining and demonstrating how skaters can and should warm up off the ice for an upcoming on-ice session. She begins by acknowledging that some skaters have as little as 4-5 minutes to warm up, while others may have 20-30 minutes. The remainder of this video is part of the 5-minute low level warm-up, which will include “a tiny bit of cardio, a tiny bit of range of motion, and then moving on to rotational jumps.”
Kate begins by jogging forward in a large circle, followed by side hops or skips with swinging arms, both with the body facing into the circle and out of the circle which means the skater will side skip both to the left and right. Next is the “grapevine” again performed both facing into the circle and out of the circle, and Kate explains later that the value of this is improved footspeed quickness. This is then followed by backward jogging on the large circle.
The next phase of this warm-up is alternating forward bunny hop skips in a straight line. Notice the focus on lifting up strongly with each “jump” rather than focusing on forward motion. The knee drive here is very important and you can see how the driving knee leads the free foot. The final exercise in this video is again alternating forward bunny hop skips, but this time the focus is on distance and not height.
NOTE: The audio on this video is not ideal, and was a compromise based on loud music in the facility and difficulty with a wireless microphone based on Kate’s movements. You can still hear her, and the information is clear.
