Common Single Jump Errors (Nick Perna)

International coach and jump specialist Nick Perna begins a lesson with a young skater and works through the single jumps. Every coach in the world who works with skaters at this level regularly sees these errors. Nick starts with a backspin and then moves from waltz jump through single lutz.

On waltz jump, Nick wants a bent free leg on the step forward and more usage of the arms for better jump height. Although the skater’s free leg swings around a bit on salchow, Nick leaves it and the toe loop is technically pretty good for this level. The skater uncrosses the free foot on the loop jump, so they work on it and the skater makes the correction. On flip the skater again rotates with the feet uncrossed so they address it as well. For the lutz, the skater is using a good outside edge entrance but still switching back to an inside edge for the jump itself. Nick works to speed up the take-off, asking the skater to get the skating foot off the ice more quickly after the picking foot makes contact with the ice. He also helps with alignment of the setup.
