2018 World Ice Dance Silver Medalists Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue offer two exercises for generating power and flow in the context of skating with a partner. The first exercise is just a repeating series of dance swing rolls. The secret to generating power with this exercise is the timing of the knee action. This timing is also critical for creating unison with a partner.
The second exercise is a repeating series of lobes consisting of an undercut push (a dance progressive) to a forward inside edge (with free leg swing through) with a change of edge just prior to the initial undercut of the next lobe. Again, the knee action is critical for mastering this exercise, and the class clearly is challenged by this common “dance move.” Notice that Madison generates power at 2 distinct places on the lobe. The first and most obvious is the undercut push, but the knee action which deepens the edge during the free leg swing and prior to the edge change is also a opportunity to create power and flow. Madison breaks down each lobe into 4 parts with specific knee action to help the class understand.
