Warm-Up Drill Called “Basketball Exercise” (Page Lipe)

In this short video, international coach Page Lipe shares a simple but very effective warm-up drill she calls the “basketball exercise.”  The drill was adapted from a warm-up used by a basketball team many years ago.

The drill consists of the skater holding on to the boards and jumping and tucking the legs repeatedly and as fast as possible.  The focus is not on height but quickness.  The video shows what the drill looks like on skaters of various sizes.

Page notes that this drill is especially useful for skaters with “dead legs” or those that need to burn off some adrenaline at competitions.  The quick movements help the body get in the mode for proper jump timing and the exercise also causes the heartrate to go up.
