Unexpected Benefits From Figure Skating Training – Part 2 (Sheila Thelen)

Figure skating specialist coach and inventor Sheila Thelen discusses ongoing research regarding the body’s vestibular system, and how figure skating training methods offer benefits not only to figure skaters but others as well. In Part 1, she discussed such benefits of vestibular training as improved cognition, improved spacial awareness, reduced disorientation, and reduced recovery time for concussions. In this video she discusses specific situations where this kind of training is showing improvements in real life situations.

One example of how vestibular training creates benefits is tying it to other programs, such as reading programs. Another area of research showing results is emotional trauma treatment, and Sheila discusses specific improvements (suicide, PTSD, homelessness, hopelessness, divorce) for those having been exposed to traumatic situations in the US military. Sheila explains it as “taking world-class sports training systems within figure skating (i.e. spin training) and applying them to the general public.”

In terms of spacial awareness, Sheila offers examples where vestibular training is being tested, such as with police/military tactical teams and firefighters. She goes on to explain how figure skaters typically have exceptional situational awareness, partly due to training on busy skating sessions with lots of moving and stationary obstacles. She offers an example of how this is a benefit in the “real world” in such activities as driving a car. She says, “These are the little pieces that are really fascinating to see how you can apply figure skating to the rest of your life.”
