Spin specialist Kim Ryan gives a young skater a lesson on some sit spin variations. The first variation is a sit forward which is known as the pancake. After the skater attempts one, Kim takes the skater to sit in the hockey box and work on the position and the hold. One trick that Kim shares is the skater should try to keep the thighs close together when initially getting into the position. She recommends putting the free calf rather than the boot on top of the skating thigh. This helps preserve the balance and alignment. Kim also offers tips for the leg grab and hold, where the skater can create maximum leverage to help pull the upper body down flat on top of the legs.
The initial attempt after the above discussion implemented Kim’s changes, but the skater came up out of the skating knee to make the transition. Kim wants the skater to stay down. Although this is still awkward for this skater, the technique continues to improve on each attempt. As Kim notes, this skater also tends to pull up and back with the upper body after grabbing the leg and while attempting to get the free leg on top of the skating leg. Kim wants the skater to instead take the upper body down and forward.
To finish the lesson, Kim takes a look at this skater’s “sit behind” position. Kim again wants the skater to stay down in the knee while keeping the upper body forward and down throughout. She also describes the hand holds in detail. These are great tips for any skater working on these skills.
