On-Ice Warm Up – Part 2 (Ryan Jahnke and Ben Agosto)

National medalist Ryan Jahnke and World and Olympic medalist Ben Agosto continue an on-ice warm up class at a summer camp. Ryan is wearing the microphone. In Part 1 the class learned several exercises as well as ankle control and positioning needed to create powerful edges.

Ryan begins this video with a repeating forward outside edge drill that focuses on position and control and full lobes. The desired position has the skater fully stretched and rotated into an open position with the free leg straight and pulled back into the circle and the skating leg bent strongly. At the top of the lobe, the feet come together (still on one foot) without loss of control as the skater straightens the skating leg. While maintaining the lobe, the skater then skates on two feet and switches the shoulders in preparation for the next lobe. Ryan wants this exercise to be performed “painfully slow” to focus on extension and control. The skaters in the class really struggle to perform this exercise correctly.

Next, Ben adds a forward outside three turn to the top of the lobe. The lobe starting position remains the same as the previous exercise but now when the skaters collect the feet together at the top of the lobe, they perform a three turn and then stretch to finish the lobe. Again, this exercise is performed with very little speed as the focus is on control and proper movement. The feet should touch (and hold) at two places on each lobe, once just before the three turn, and again just prior to stepping forward onto the new lobe. Ryan adds skating side arm up which also challenges rotational control. Notice how the skaters tend to swing the free leg during these exercises rather than placing it and controlling it. Ryan explains how these exercises relate to good jumping. Ben then has the class hit the correct positions at a standstill to feel the positions and desired stillness.

For the final exercise in this video, Ben demonstrates a “jumpy three turn” or a “hopped” three turn exercise while Ryan’s voice is dubbed over the video. This exercise simulates a forward one-foot waltz jump with body and shoulder control inside the landing edge. Notice how Ben’s free arm is pulled back for landing even before he touches the ice on each landing.
