Olympic Team medalist and coach Mirai Nagasu continues an off-ice seminar jump class focusing on the loop and double loop. In Part 1 she discussed alignment over the axis side and taught a hopping and rotating exercise to develop position and rotational control. In Part 2 she focused again on proper alignment with special emphasis on remaining over the axis side and snapping to the axis side. In this video, Mirai begins by asking how long jumps are on the ice and she gets an exaggerated answer but she says, “You can theoretically do more than one jump in a second. We should be able to do doubles.” From a hopping and rotating entry, she wants the class to do single-single-double. She uses “da da da da” for the hopping rotations and then says, “up up up in out” to provide timing for the overall exercise. She continues, “Do you know why I say ‘up in out’ on the double?” She wants to ensure the class remembers to jump up into an h-position first before pulling in to rotate.
Next Mirai highlights one of the skaters in the class and notes how strong his “snap” into the rotational position is. She likens the lifting and spinning motion to a blender as a way to help the skaters visualize it. She uses this as another opportunity to discuss how the body needs to be aligned properly over the axis foot/side. She then has the whole class return to the single-single-double exercise, and some of the skaters are using therapy bands to help with control and awareness of the upper body. She notes that skaters should not open the free hip as it slows the rotation (and makes landing very difficult). She then shows the class a simple method to step up into a floxed position. This has the skater pressed up on the non-axis toe with the axis knee locked and the axis foot flexed upward off the floor. Mirai shows an example of this flox exercise with a half rotation.
