Off-Ice Jump Power – Dead Stop Snatch With Kettlebell (Matthew Blair Davis)

Figure skating strength and conditioning expert Matthew Blair Davis continues his series on off-ice jump power training. In the first video of the series, he demonstrated a fancy setup for gathering detailed data for monitoring a skater’s progress and providing motivation. In the second video, Matthew shared a low tech off-ice drill to help develop jumping power. In the third video he shared another drill that is simple in concept but very valuable in terms of results. In the fourth video, he offered a hurdle exercise intended to build quickness and power. In this video, he teaches a one arm kettlebell drill called the Dead Stop Snatch.

The drill starts with the kettlebell in front of the skater with the skater bent down with a flat back to hold the handle with one hand. The skater then swings the kettlebell back between the legs and then drives it forward and all the way up overhead. Done correctly, the skater thrusts the hips forward powerfully as part of the snatch.

Matthew explains the benefits of the drill, as many skaters possess good leg strength but lack power generation through the hips. The drill also provides back and shoulder strengthening, as well as providing a significant workout for the core. Matthew addresses the size of the kettlebell, the material it’s made of, and how many reps to do.
