Off-Ice Harness and Electric Spinner – Part 2 (Sheila Thelen)

Figure skating specialist coach Sheila Thelen explains the results and benefits of the off-ice harness work in the previous video, Part 1. Because Sheila took ‘before and after’ measurements on a balance mat, she is able to show empirically how much improvement the skater has in specific aspects of her balance and reaction times. Although this kind of measurement will not directly benefit a skater, this 2-part video series shows the benefits of doing this kind of off-ice training in terms of athleticism and cognitive development. Because figure skaters spin so much, they typically score very well on these kinds of tests, but less-athletic and older segments of the population show much more dramatic improvements than we see here. This work by Sheila is being recognized in many fields outside of figure skating, and the tools and teaching methods we use regularly in this sport are being adapted to help whole new segments of society.
