More on Mindset and Success (Audrey Weisiger)

At a camp for aspiring skaters, World and Olympic coach Audrey Weisiger shares more helpful insights on the mental aspects of training and competition. She begins by explaining, “Your (bed)room should be an environment of motivation and stimulation, positive thinking, what you need to do to get better. Nurturing.” Nick Perna then tells how ’84 Olympic Champion had a sign in his bedroom that said, “Everything before the word ‘but’ is a lie.”

Next Audrey talks about the Olympic motto which is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” and means “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” She notes that it doesn’t say fastest, highest, strongest – it’s about getting better every day which is the “Olympic way of thinking.” She then talks about the differences between a winner (win that day), a star (charisma, popular), a hero (won’t give up), and a champion (has all those qualities).

Challenges and bumps in the road are part of the success process. Audrey says, “When something happens and you don’t like it, what are you going to do about it?” This is a reminder to take responsibility rather than feeling like a victim.

She then offers some insights about SUCCESS.

S = satisfied
U = uncommon
C = competent
C =confident
E = excited
S = scholarly (feel smarter)
S = shepherded (feel blessed)

Audrey then discusses the idea that anyone can “Re-write Your Ending” which means “On any given day we have an opportunity to re-write moments in our lives. Live your life with purpose, choose wisely, courageously and without regret.” Long term and big picture thinking like “How do I want to be remembered” is an important way to put the good and the bad into perspective.

Next Audrey discusses the valuable concept of “Finding Your Why.” This kind of self reflection helps you find your purpose and determine what you like about yourself and what you choose to spend your time on. It offers clarity about what happens if you reach your goals and what will happen if you don’t. She then talks about the concept of internal versus external motivation. Understanding yourself in this way is extremely powerful as it can help you accomplish more.
