Lesson on Bounces or Forward Illusions (Sheila Thelen)

Figure skating coach Sheila Thelen teaches bounces to a skater who has never done them before. Sheila refers to bounces as “forward illusions,” and many coaches and skaters use this same terminology, even though it is not strictly correct. Bounces are a windmill-type spin performed from a forward camel (unlike “illusions” which are performed from a back camel). Also, check out this video on bounces by spin specialist Bobbe Shire, and her followup video here.

The skater in this video has a hard time with this spin, so the value in the video is mostly a result of the variety of ways Sheila describes it to help the skater understand. Timing is critical and the head and free leg have a lot of movement, which is hard for most skaters when first learning it. Finding ways to exaggerate the motions while building timing is the key to success. Notice the trick to keep the head in the correct position (bite the coat drill).
