National level coach Jackie Brenner shares some tips and ideas for basic layback spins and variations. Jackie covered valuable spin basics in the previous video. She begins by having the skater do a “classical” layback spin. Jackie then addresses one of the most common issues with laybacks, “I would love to see her try to initiate the position more from her hip flexors and then to feel the curvature in her spine and then to drop her head back eventually.”
To help develop a better understanding of pressing the hips forward to stretch the hip flexors, Jackie uses a two foot swizzle glide with the hips forward. She wants the hands in front and in line with the belly button so the hands press upward only because the hips press forward and the back arches. Jackie cautions against throwing the head back or raising the arms as the first movement. The skater exaggerates the hips-forward position on the next attempt.
Jackie then has another skater demonstrate a level 4 layback spin with a number of positions moving from a side layback with clearly stacked shoulders to a haircutter (with a speed increase) to a Biellmann. Jackie is not satisfied with the increase in speed feature so she asks the skater to make this more clear.
