Off Ice Figure Skating Training – Part 4 (Kori Ade)

Kori Ade continues with the fourth part of a multi-part series on off-ice training.  In Part 1, Kori introduced her demonstrators, went through a short warm-up, and proceeded to dynamic stretching.  In Part 2, she focused on a few challenging strength development exercises and in Part 3 Kori addressed the importance of hydration and shared some very challenging core development exercises.  In this video, Kori gives some great exercises using a Bosu ball.

Notice how Kori progressively challenges the skaters with harder exercises.  On the Bosu ball, she has the skaters jump on with two feet and stabilize.  Then she progresses to one foot.  Kori builds in the difficulty of staying completely on one foot throughout the drill to keep the skaters focused so they stay aware of what they’re actually doing.

By flipping the Bosu ball over, Kori is able to create variations on these drills that work slightly different muscles and stabilization skills.  Kori says, “This is proprioceptive awareness.  So now we’re just creating a sense of your body in space and how it’s operating on an unstable surface.”  Is this the definition of figure skating?
