Spin specialist Kim Ryan continues a spin lesson with a skater working on improving a combination spin. In Part 1 the focus was on the camel spin position and lunge entry. In Part 2 she focused on the A-frame and alternate upright spin position that follows the camel in the combination. In this video, the focus shifts to the twisted back sit portion of the combination. Kim beings by offering more advice for the alternate A-frame position before discussing possible arm positions for the twisted sit. Here Kim is recommending more forward body lean and more twist as well as keeping the head facing downward and twisted against the shoulders. She notes that this desired head position can be helpful in getting the body more forward and it can also help increase spin speed.
After another attempt by the skater, Kim again focuses on the shoulder twist because the skater isn’t twisting enough to get the feature. She tells the skater to “be aggressive” with the position. Kim also discusses the A-frame/upright alternate, noting that the skater needs to hinge more from the hips to get the back flat (“base of spine should face the ceiling”). Kim also explains that by looking up on the twisted sit the skater tends to pull up and away from the spin in a way that makes a good twist difficult.
