National level coach Debbie Warne-Jacobsen begins a series of videos offering insights and exercises to improve toe loop technique for double and triple toe loop development. Debbie begins with a series of 5 single toe loops in a row, having the skater focus on gliding through with the axis foot and jumping out with the axis side. She has the skater holding a skate guard in her axis hand to help ensure she drives that arm forward through the take-off (and has a better awareness of that arm position in the air).
In response to a question, Debbie notes that this skater uses a simple pushback for her toe loop entry (rather than more traditional forward inside three turn or forward outside drop three turn) just because that is comfortable for her. The skater explains her challenges with the toe loop and the variety of entrances and take-offs over the years. Debbie explains the simple pushback entry method is great for getting good body alignment over the axis side.
Next, Debbie shares her “how do you do?” concept of thinking about the set and reach position after the pushback (like meeting a someone you haven’t seen in a long time). She calls this “the how do you do?” and then “come on through” to pivot and release into the jump.
The next exercise is a single toe followed by a pirouette and a “zippy hop” which is a toeless toe loop or a loop jump with the free foot behind. This loop jump with the free foot back is helpful for increasing hip turn speed or “snapping the hips.” This drill needs some speed to maintain flow.
