Circular Drill for Power and Flow (Pasquale Camerlengo)

World and Olympic figure skating coach and choreographer Pasquale Camerlengo talks about creating power and flow and he shares a “simple” circular drill.  In the beginning of the video, he emphasizes the importance of working on edges and generating power from the edges (not just pushes).  Next he has International ice dancer Zach Donohue demonstrate one of his favorite drills.

The drill consists of a forward outside three turn, followed by a step or push to a back outside three turn, followed by an inside mohawk and then a push into an extended landing position.  The basic steps can even be accomplished by low level skaters, but the value in the exercise comes from using every turn and step and stretch to create power and flow.

Watch Zach’s demonstration closely and you’ll see power generated on the exit of the forward outside three turn, then again on using the front foot on the forward mohawk, and again on the mohawk exit into the landing position.  By pressing on the ice and stretching up into the landing position, Pasquale has his skaters generate even more flow.  The demonstration by Zach is great for modeling.

Pasquale offers another tip of having skaters feel like they are pushing themselves backward with their arms on the push back into the landing position.  This helps maintain alignment and position and keeps the core engaged.
