Outside Edges – Forward Outside Cross Strokes (Pasquale Camerlengo)

World and Olympic figure skating coach and choreographer Pasquale Camerlengo explains how he develops stronger outside edges, primarily through the use of cross strokes or cross rolls (dance).  Bending before the push is critical for proper power generation.  The cross rolls demonstrated in the video are a great model to study.

Pasquale uses both slow and fast cross rolls for outside edge development.  He notes that a very fast tempo makes this skill difficult, but jokes about why (they’re not difficult at all!).  These fast edge rolls ARE difficult for most skaters because body alignment and knee rhythm are only parts of the story.  Most skaters lack control of the necessary ankle movements to get strong edges, especially with a quick tempo.  Again the demonstration provides and excellent example to model.

Pasquale notes that the slow version allows the skater more time to prepare for the transitions, including more helpful body movements.  He explains the preparation in some detail.  But the fast version is valuable for free skating because it teaches quickness of movement while emphasizing proper alignment and knee rhythm, which is a major component of freestyle skating.  As a world level choreographer, Pasquale is always looking to develop skating skills that relate to elite skating in terms of the component mark.
