Challenging On-Ice Strength and Balance Exercises (Kate Charbonneau)

Figure skating coach Kate Charbonneau demonstrates a fun and challenging exercise for improving strength and balance. The exercise consists of a continuous glide with a spiral, a shoot the duck, and an upright victory position (y-spin). Kate says, “This is for some leg strength, and really some grit out of your skaters.” She recommends this exercise for the end of an edge class, or end of a skating session. Ideally this exercise is done forward on a straight line, backward on a straight line, and then backward on a circle, once on each foot for a total of 6 glides. As Kate explains, this exercise is challenging enough that it can tire out a skater’s legs quickly, and is therefore only appropriate at the end of a session.
