Boots and Lacing Reminders (Chris Conte)

Before an on-ice seminar class International coach and jump specialist Chris Conte checks the skates of the skaters in the class. This video is a reminder to coaches to periodically check their skater’s boots and blades, and make sure they are tying their skates correctly.

One of the skaters in the class has very loose laces right at the ankle of the boot and Chris explains that this is a problem because it causes premature boot break down. Some skaters who struggle with “lace bite” or similar issues at the ankle often don’t tighten this area properly, and sometimes skaters leave it loose so they can crank the top of the boot very tight and still bend their knees and ankles.

Next Chris has the skaters pronate and supinate their ankles so he can see how much lateral support the skates are providing. Here he is mostly concerned with the boot collapsing to the inside edge on jump landings, which pushes the the axis hip out.

Finally Chris explains he has his skaters change out their laces for new ones every 2-3 months.
