Back Sit Spin With a Core Twist (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues working with a skater on a variety of spins. In the previous videos the focus was on sit spin, camel spin, layback spin, back camel spin, back camel back sit combobroken leg sit spinbullet or sit front variation with entry tips, and pancake spin. In this video, Charyl and the skater work on a back sit spin with a core twist. She begins by having the skater feel the twist in a stationary, 2 foot squatted position where the skater twists open to the non-axis side by pressing the axis arm against the outside of the non-axis leg and raising the non-axis arm up and behind. Charyl also explains the skater needs to pull the axis hip back and turn the head to look up at the non-axis arm. Because it’s a back sit spin, it needs to balance over the axis leg, even while twisting. Charyl recommends starting from a base back sit position and then working on the twist as a way to learn the position.

Some of the errors in the initial attempts include not turning the head (enough), not twisting the shoulders enough by using arm-to-knee/leg leverage, releasing the non-axis hip behind (rather than pulling back the axis hip strongly), changing the balance point on the blade while twisting, and not staying aligned over the skating foot (Charyl says, “Lean to the right but twist to the left”). Charyl also reminds the skater of basic sit-change-sit technique with the axis-side arm. She also has the skater do an upright 2-foot spin while pulling up and back on the non-axis arm to feel the benefit of using that arm in terms of speed. After the final attempt, Charyl is pleased with the progress and notes the need to focus on balance over the the skating side.
