World and Olympic ice dance medalist Madison Hubbell continues her lesson on basic skating skills and patterns for the USFS Preliminary Moves in the Field tests. (See the previous video here.) In this video, the focus is on alternating forward outside three turns, also typically referred to as “three turns on the line.” After watching the skater skate the pattern, Madison focuses initially on having the skater bend the knee on the initial edge before the turn, straightening the knee to “release” naturally for the turn, and re-bending after the turn.
After addressing proper knee bend, it’s clear the skater is struggling with control of the edge after the turn. Madison explains this is partly due to how the skater uses the hips for the turn. She wants the skater to enter the three turn on the forward outside edge with the free hip held behind, where it stays throughout the turn and the turn exit edge. She makes the point that hip control is the key, while shoulder and arm positioning is not as important, although it gets most of the attention from skaters at this level.
Next, Madison focuses on the arms, encouraging the skater to check the turn with the shoulders while keeping the arms slightly in front of the shoulders with some tension. By skating the pattern with the skater and holder her hands, Madison is able to really convey the desired shoulder and arm position and movement. The skater even exclaims “oh” as she feel the correct execution and understands what Madison is showing her. Over-twisting the arms and shoulders results in an undesirable weight shift on the blade, resulting in wobbles. The final performance of the pattern is a significant improvement.
