World and Olympic coach Michelle Leigh continues a multi-part series on off-ice jumping. In Part 1 she focused on some basics and the axel. In this video, she discusses the salchow and some drills to improve landings.
For the off-ice salchow, Michelle likes the skaters to start by hopping on their take-off foot with the free foot held low while rotating, thus creating some rotational momentum since there is no flow or edges to work with. The demonstrators attempt off-ice triple salchows, but the concept works for singles and doubles as well.
Michelle emphasizes how to stop rotation with the axis arm (landing side) and the head. She also offers drill where the skaters hop backward in a straight line to strengthen the position at the moment of impact. She says this builds a skater’s confidence in their ability to stay in a tight rotational position until the end of the jump. Note that she wants the shoulders “in line with the foot.” Michelle also offers a variation of this drill where the skaters hop backward in a zig-zag pattern as a way to build confidence and strength for imperfect landings.
