International coach Lorie Charbonneau shares some ideas for creating an effective and engaging power skating class. In this video, she selects some interval training workout music off YouTube with a 20/20 split or 20 seconds of work (fast skating, sprinting) and 20 seconds of rest (gliding). The music she selects includes verbal countdowns and commands to keep everyone on the same page, while also reducing the responsibility of the coach to keep track of the timer. She has the skaters do 4 sets in each forward and backward direction for a total of 16 total 20/20 splits. She notes that this works with a variety of interval splits like 30/30 or 30/10 and you can do enough sets to fill a 30 minute power class.
Lorie says, “This is a really good way to get a workout in. It’s kind of fun.” She continues, “Some skaters really take this really seriously and are always trying to win and come ahead of other skaters, and some don’t care at all.” This kind of workout is about “powering it through” rather than focusing on technique. Coaches can also specify specific skating strokes such as swizzles only or hopping over the hockey lines. Previewing the music ahead of time may be good idea to make sure it’s appropriate. Obviously this video was edited to convey the concept rather than see the entire process/class in real time.
