USFS Juvenile Skating Skills – Part 2, Stroking: Backward Power Circle (Kate Charbonneau)

Coach and choreographer Kate Charbonneau continues her presentation on the USFS Bronze Skating Skills test (formerly USFS Juvenile Moves in the Field Test). In the previous video she discussed Forward Crossover Power Circles and in this video she offers insights about the second pattern, Stroking: Backward Power Circles.

Before the skater runs the pattern, Kate asks the skater to look in the direction of travel and have straight arms. As the skater is performing the pattern, Kate acknowledges the shoulders are up a bit but she is pleased the skater is remaining down in her knees.

On the second side the skater is leaning in the direction she is coming from (forward body lean) which means “she’s not able to push under as hard as she needs to.” This also makes the push under very “shallow” when the speed and tempo picks up. Kate wants the skater to stand more upright to be able to put more weight on the inside foot for the undercut. She finishes by acknowledging that all skaters have one side stronger than the other which means the weaker side just needs more work.
