Jump Exercise For Control and Alignment (Audrey Weisiger, Rafael Arutyunyun)

World and Olympic coach Audrey Weisiger continues to work with a class of high level skaters on improving their step into double axel, although some of the drills are useful for other jumps as well, and that is true for this video. (You can see the first part of the class here and the second part of the class here.) At the start of the video a young skater (Dasha Koval) is demonstrating a jump drill concept with double axel. This drill was shared by World and Olympic coach Rafael Arutyunyun at this seminar, and the skaters in Audrey’s class are playing with these ideas.

The drill consists of a series of pushes and steps and turns on a circle in the rotational direction of the jump. Specifically it begins with a forward outside three turn on the non-axis skate, followed by a push back to the back outside edge of the axis skate, then a step to another forward outside three turn and another step down but this time the skater does a “free leg behind walley/loop” onto the back outside edge of the axis foot, then steps forward into the double axel. The drill is repeating and can build from single to double to triple axel. This kind of exercise is valuable for teaching rotational control, edge pressure/power, and rhythmical movements for improved jump take-offs. Audrey notes how each of the steps and edges is a chance to build speed.

The “drill walley” is really a single loop jump with the free leg behind. Kori Ade calls this a “loose leg” or “loose leg loop” in this video. The jump is also commonly called a “toeless toe loop.” This specific jump exercise is helpful for building rhythm, jump timing, overall alignment and axis, and mastering rotation creation and control. Overall, a series of turns and steps and jumps like this can be created for other jump training as well (not just axel jumps), for similar reasons and with similar results.
