World and Olympic coach Tom Zakrajsek teaches the details for a classic flip jump exercise or entry consisting of 3 three turns prior to the singe/double/triple flip. The exercise starts with a forward outside three turn on the non-picking foot, followed by a back inside three turn and another forward outside three turn on that foot before picking for the jump. This exercise can be tricky because the three turns need to be separate and controlled for the jump to succeed and the tendency is to simply let the multiple turns mush together which can create a spinny flip take-off.
To begin this video, Tom talks about the details of blade usage on the forward outside three turn, noting that the skater enters the three turn on the middle-back part of the blade with the “foot (toes) lifted” so the “turn happens naturally.” He describes the turn itself as a “flip” from forward to backward and a “flip” from the outside to inside edge. Thinking of making this turn precise helps eliminate edge issues for the flip jump and it also helps maintain flow and directionality for the exercise.
Tom then explains the exercise and has the class do it. After the skaters attempt it, Tom explains he wants the front or skating-side arm (non-axis arm) across the body so the skater can “step into the arm.” This helps keep the axis side back throughout the entry. He also explains that the free leg should “stay behind” and remain still throughout the entire entry and he says, “Keep the free leg engaged behind.”
Next Tom brings the class together and talks about training habits. He wants them to “practice with key points” and “pay attention to our skating.” He then reviews the key points for this exercise. One is keeping the free side back on the running three turns, another is lifting the toes in the skate, and yet another is the idea of “flipping” the turn crisply and with intention. He emphasizes not over-thinking, but instead feeling action and reaction so the “rotation should take care of itself.”
