Figure skating spin specialist Kim Ryan teaches a spin class at a recent seminar. In Part 1, Kim summarized the basics of her teaching methods. The focus in that video was the basic forward upright spin, and she continues with that in this presentation. She reviews the concepts and distributes the class around the ice so they can work on the basics all together. Kim stresses her skinny-V concept with the “belly button sewn to your back” for centering, as well as keeping the arms in front of the body. She also says, “When you pull your arms in try not to pull your elbows back” and instead “keep those elbows down.”
Next, Kim teaches the class an eggbeater with is sometimes referred to as a needle or the stork. This is a forward upright spin with forward free leg catch. This a relatively easy way to introduce a catch foot spin to beginners and lower level skaters. Kim explains the process in detail, from placing the free leg on the skating knee, then grabbing the front of the laces/boot and the the other grabbing the knee, to finally releasing the free side hand to “zip up the zipper” to the final position with the free side hand over the head. She repeats the process many times, and has the class get used to the procedure by skating forward down the ice while changing positions. The class then gets to attempt the spin.
