In this very short video, World and Olympic coach Michelle Leigh begins an axel class with skaters who are either landing the jump or are very close. The main point of this video is the free leg kick through position. Michelle makes a point of stressing that an h-position is appropriate for salchow but not for the axel. She demonstrates the proper axel movement and explains, “Some people call it a ninja leg, sideways… Sideways so your knee is on one side and your foot is on the other (side of the flight path). It’s not an h.” Michelle also encourages the skaters to “spin fast” on their axel walkthroughs as many skaters initially struggle with fear of rotating fast in the air on single and double axel, resulting in under-rotated jumps.
