Single Lutz Lesson and Tips (Robert Tebby)

World and Olympic coach Robert Tebby gives a young skater a lesson on the single lutz jump. This is a continuation of the lesson where Robert worked with this same skater on the single flip jump. Go back and watch that video to have a clearer background for what he’s doing in this video. On the first attempt the skater two foots the landing and Robert makes a point of letting the skater know a one-foot landing was possible. Almost all good coaches focus relentlessly on getting one-foot landings, even on weak jumps. The benefit to the skater later on for landing questionable jumps is huge. As with the flip, Robert asks for less scratching and a “more quiet” jump.

Next Robert does a hands-on drill with the skater with the goal being to engage the muscles in the legs and hips. As in the previous video he has the skater lift the non-picking leg in front as well as behind on different repetitions of the drill. Robert also focuses on the timing of the picking motion, as this skater makes the common error of trying to pick too soon and too violently. The skater lands the final attempt, although as Robert notes, it’s quite scratchy. Throughout this lesson, notice that Robert is not focusing directly on fixing the change of edge problem. At this level, the change of edge often simply goes away by working to develop proper movements and timing, doing the drills, and focusing on being quiet.
