International coach and jump specialist Jeremy Allen addresses shoulder turn on jump take-offs. First, he notes that for all jumps the shoulders are checked and twisted to the axis side on the setup. This jump preparation helps control rotation and creates “wind-up” for the jump release. As a jump “releases” or begins rotation, the shoulders quickly “catch up with the hips” rotationally. From there, it largely depends on the individual skater whether the shoulders should remain locked to the hips or whether the shoulders can lead the hips through the final rotation while the skater is still on the ice. Many skaters simply cannot control or manage the rotation if they allow their shoulders to “pre-rotate” with respect to the hips, so coaches need to evaluate every skater for what feels natural and what works for that individual skater.
