Lutz Jump – Part 2: More Insights and Tips (Robert Tebby)

World and Olympic coach Robert Tebby continues his presentation on the lutz. In Part 1 he shared many thoughts and some exercises for lutz development. He begins this video by describing an exercise he calls “jump the line” which consists of gliding backwards on two feet parallel to a line on the ice, then performing an edge pull toward the line on the back outside edge of the non-axis foot. He continues, “We’re going to pull towards the line and it’s like a jump-counter. You jump and land on the same foot (non-axis foot) so there’s no toe pick.” He explains that this exercise teaches the skater to use the “big muscles” in the proper way to create rotational momentum for the jump while remaining balanced over the outside take-off edge. He notes that this teaches correct knee timing and core/shoulder rotation at the same time. The next phase of the “jump the line” exercise is to place the toe pick on the line and simply stand up on the toe, allowing the non-picking foot to continue through across the line.

Next Robert talks about jump axis and how the jump should be leaned back slightly at take-off so the jump has the proper axis while flying through the air. He describes this as the feet going through the air first and the head going through the air last. This is achieved on the take-off by keeping the head anchored. While demonstrating he says, “When you’re pushing off the ice it should feel like your belly button is up, your head is still straight, and your hips are under.” He warns against a common axis issue which cause “stability issues on the landing.”
