Lutz Entry Ideas (Sheila Thelen)

Figure skating specialist coach Sheila Thelen discusses the lutz entry and offers some alternatives to the classic “lutz corner” entry. The old-school “lutz corner” entry remains popular but causes massive problems with session flow, safety, and even proper lutz execution. Instead, Sheila recommends “straight line” lutz entries that can be done anywhere on the ice, especially in locations normally associated with the other toe jumps (toe loop and flip).

One of these entries has the skater performing a forward inside mohawk in the direction of jump rotation, followed by a push back to the back outside take-off edge. Sheila explains this as an entry of edges, but as the skater demonstrates, the edges become shallow with higher entry speeds.

Another alternative is using a “power pull” preparation, where the skater sets up in a straight line using the mohawk concept above but instead of pushing back immediately to the back outside take-off edge, the skater pushes back to a very slight back outside edge with an edge change to the inside edge and then the final outside edge for the jump take-off. Although Sheila explains this as power pulls and it is similar to power pulls, by minimizing shoulder turn during the edge changes the point is not to generate power but to set up for a strong active take-off edge which many skaters can better feel from an edge change.

Kerry How about this trick? Same pattern, two forward crossovers into a forward cross roll, into a forward outside three turn, step onto outside edge and up. Done up the middle, with the jump being in line with the goalie's crease.
