Low Level Choreography Lesson – Part 3 (Kate Charbonneau)

Coach and choreographer Kate Charbonneau continues a choreography session with a young skater to build a new low level program. In Part 1 Kate got to know the skater a bit and challenged the skater with some new movements. In Part 2 she laid out a majority of the skater’s program utilizing the skills from Part 1. In this video, Kate finishes the program and reworks a few details.

The first part of this video is just Kate skating the program as laid out in the previous video. Feel free to skip to about 1:32 in the video to avoid this, or you can watch it as a refresher. Kate reminds the skater to make big powerful movements as much as possible. Next, she observes the skater’s bunny hop and then adds it to the program, followed by some simple choreographic movements on two feet. She then sets up for the final spin in the middle of the ice. She repeats this section for the skater in more detail with more-defined arm movements.

Kate then has the skater skate the entire program to music, but in order to conserve time it was not included in this video. Instead we pick up the lesson after this run-through and Kate is impressed with this skater’s ability to remember the steps and arms. She notices the skater is stiff throughout (which is common when learning a new program) so she reminds the skater to bend more throughout, including the waltz jump loading phase.

Since repetition is critical to memory development, Kate again goes through the end of the program with the skater and adds an ending pose. She finishes by complimenting the skater and adding a sense of completion to the lesson.
