Coach and choreographer Kate Charbonneau continues a choreography session with a young skater to build a new program. In Part 1 Kate got to know the skater a bit and challenged the skater with some new movements. In this video, Kate essentially lays out a majority of the skater’s program utilizing the skills from Part 1. There isn’t much “teaching” in this video, and the real take-away is just to see how Kate interacts with the skater while demonstrating the choreography. Notice how Kate describes the movements as she demonstrates them, and notice the overall slow pacing of the lesson. Everything is deliberate, with regular repetition and positive reinforcement.
Also notice that Kate isn’t spending much time correcting movements or skills, but rather she focuses on building a program in an efficient way so the skater remembers it more easily. Another detail that is easy to overlook is how Kate positions herself so the skater can see her throughout. This means adjusting her position with respect to the skater, often leading her through the program. The constant repetition, while slowly adding more and more choreography is a proven method to maximize learning speed. At the end of this video, Kate has the skater try to remember the entire program (without music) and this skater does a pretty good job.
