Group Class Double Loop (Audrey Weisiger)

World and Olympic coach Audrey Weisiger teaches a double loop class at a recent seminar. Admittedly, Audrey does not offer drills or specific instruction (as in the related video here) but this is a helpful reminder of common double loop errors and a model for coaches who teach group classes. The class begins by attempting a double loop. Audrey then gathers them together and asks what corrections they might make on the next attempt. It seems obvious to evaluate the last attempt before attempting the next one, but not all skaters (especially young skaters) automatically do this simple process. Many skaters mindlessly attempt jump after jump, assuming that by simply trying it again they are learning something useful. By asking questions like this, Audrey is trying to help them develop a self-learning process that will continue to benefit them long after this particular class.

Even skaters who land a nice jump the way they intended can always “improve” the jump in a variety of ways such as using a higher entry speed, jumping higher, or having more flow on landing. The most common error at this level as Audrey notes is skaters’ tendency to “go outside the circle” and the solution is to “stay on the curve.” She mentions scallops which she covered in a previous video. Audrey also says, “If you’re going to do a triple loop someday, you’re going to have to jump a lot higher.”

In a comment to one of the attending coaches watching the session Audrey says, “It’s amazing what a little group training can do.” By this she is acknowledging how some skaters feel less pressure in a group setting which helps them relax and perform, while others feel more pressure which can also be a powerful motivation to perform better.
